Halloween is just around the corner, and in some places it’s closer than others. See, here in our neighborhood, the Grinch stole Halloween and decided to move it to Saturday. If kids want to trick or treat, they’ve got to do it on Saturday (the 27th of October) and they aren’t allowed to go out on Halloween night. Is it just me, or is this crazy?

Way to take the fun out of Halloween! Back in the day, long long ago, when I was trick or treating, we went whether it was a Sunday or a Tuesday or a Wednesday.

Of course, we always preferred if it was on a weekend so we could stay up late afterwards trading candy and having a slumber party. But Halloween was always on Halloween.

This year, they further sucked the fun out of the holiday by not only making kids trick or treat on October 27th, but also by only allowing them to do so between the hours of 5 and 7 pm. It’s not even dark by 7pm!

I don’t remember EVER trick or treating in daylight. Dark and spooky nights are part of the fun of trick or treating! And all the better for concealing your cans of silly string and shaving cream and rolls of toilet paper… not that I ever did anything like that.

I will totally admit that I trick or treated until my sophom*ore year of high school. Let’s face it, we all know what a sweet tooth I have. Free candy? Heck yes! Why spend hard earned babysitting dollars on candy when I could get it free?

So at 15 and 16 years old, my friends and I put on all the camouflaged clothing we could find, called it a costume, and went in search of free candy and mailboxes to fill with shaving cream… I mean… what? I never did that.

But the point of this is… while we got away with our tricks and treats under the cover of darkness at age 15, I am pretty sure I would have been way too embarrassed to be seen in broad daylight (maybe that’s why we decided on camouflage?).

I’m pretty sure trick or treating in broad daylight on October 27th will never be as fun as Halloween was back in the olden days. I’m getting so old. But seriously, what’s the point?

I can see using the weekend for booze-filled grown up Halloween parties, to avoid the November 1st halt in productivity at companies across the country. But what’s the harm in getting a little sugar high and staying up past ::gasp:: 7pm, one school night a year?

It just makes me sad. Especially since I will now miss seeing cute trick or treaters at my door thanks to one of those aforementioned grown up booze-filled affairs.

Does this weird weekend Halloween rule exist anywhere else? This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it.

Whether you are celebrating this weekend or next Wednesday, I’ve got a fun and easy recipe for you and your little goblins!

This treat was delicious and stayed crunchy and fresh for a whole week in tupperware. Don’t ask me how it wasn’t gobbled up before then! Hope you make it! Enjoy!
