MICHIGAN CITY — The final participant in a five-person conspiracy to distribute fentanyl in the Michigan City area from June to August 2021 was sentenced Thursday to 5½ years in federal prison.

Cornelius Nelson, 34, of Elkhart, also was ordered by U.S. District Judge Damon R. Leichty to spend 3 years on supervised release following his prison term.

According to court records, Nelson delivered controlled substances and helped facilitate transactions where his co-conspirators sold pills purporting to be oxycodone that actually were fentanyl.

Nelson also admitted to selling fentanyl to customers, handling money and aiding in resupplying controlled substances, records show.

According to court records, the other individuals involved in the conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and their prison terms are: Rico Marion, 37 years; Brandon Harris, 12½ years; Meliki Marion, 11 years; and Carissa McCoy, 5 years.

They also each were sentenced to 5 years of supervised release after getting out of prison, records show.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, including its Merrillville and Chicago offices, with assistance by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the LaPorte County Drug Task Force; and the Michigan City Police Department.

It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kimberly L. Schultz and Joel Gabrielse.
