Vanderbilt, railroad heir, bequeathed $41 million to Vanderbilt University, Nashville, in a will that distributed his fortune to universities, medi-cal schools, hospitals and charitable institutions in five states, bis attorneys announced today. The gift to Vanderbilt, one of the largest in the history of academic philanthropy, was arranged several years ago by Vanderbilt in the form of an irrevocable trust payable at the time of his death, and also thru another trust set up by his will. He died in Newport, R. Saturday at the age of 85. Harvard Gets Money The yachtsman and originator of contract bridge also left an irrevocable trust to Harvard University of about $5.6 million.

Markin, who lived in Kalamazoo and formerly in Chicago, died Tuesday in a Kalamazoo hospital. He founded Checker Motors Corporation, then called Checker Cab Manufacturing Company, in 1922 in Chicago. In 1930 he bought control of Checker Taxi Company here.
